Norwich Church Hosts World Music Teacher

A hymn writer who has collected congregational music from around the world will lead a session on “Singing With the Global Church” on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at the Norwich Congregational Church.

John L. Bell of Glasgow, Scotland, will lead the session on global music, which begins at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to “come prepared to sing, listen and enjoy.”

Bell is associated with the Iona Community in Scotland, an ecumenical group that that is seeking renewal of the Christian church and society. He is a well-known preacher, workshop leader and broadcaster in Britain and beyond, and says he has a deep interest in music from non-European cultures.

The Rev. Mary Brownlow, pastor of Norwich Congregational, said Bell is “an engaging, charismatic person’’ who “gets people to sing.” She said he has collected music from countries as diverse as Korea, Mexico, Mozambique and Cuba, much of it from poorer regions and consisting of what she called “freedom songs.”

Norwich Congregational Church is located at 15 Church St. in Norwich.
