Letter: Preparing for Christmas Revels
While waiting for the wonderful Irish Christmas Revels in December, we encourage everyone to join us for some great fun and learning in the community! The Christmas Revels, coming to the Hopkins Center on Dec. 13-16, will showcase the lively music and dance of Irish immigrants in the early 1900s. Many Vermont and New Hampshire towns became home to the Irish in the 1800s and 1900s, where their labor helped build the railroads and their traditions became the roots of the fiddling, dancing and storytelling we love in New England.
So, come learn more about this part of our heritage! Hear Dartmouth Professor Emeritus Bruce Nelson speak about “Immigrants and Exiles: Becoming Irish American” at the Norwich Congregational Church tomorrow evening at 7. The event is free.
Enjoy a lively evening of Irish music with Jennifer Culley Curtin and Friends at Salt hill Pub in Hanover on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m. (no cover charge).
Want some afternoon family time? The Revels Children’s Chorus performs A Musical Journey from Ireland to America at the Howe Library on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. (free). Boston dancer and choreographer Kieran Jordan comes to the Norwich Grange on Monday, Dec. 10, to teach the Irish improvisational dance style called “Sean-nos.” Kieran’s beginner workshop runs from 5 to 6:15 p.m. for ages 11 to adult, followed by an intermediate-advanced class from 6:30-7:45 p.m. for ages 9 to adult with experience.
Visit www.revelsnorth.org to learn more, register on-line for Kieran’s dance workshop and find videos of Kieran and our other Christmas Revels guest performers.
