Cleta Pierce Wheeler

Norwich, Vt. — Cleta Pierce Wheeler, 76, of Norwich passed away Monday, July 28, 2014 in Brooksville, Fla. Cleta was born in Waterville, Vt. on Sept. 2, 1937.

She graduated from Jeffersonville High School in 1954, going on to earn a degree in Nursing from the University of Vermont. Her entire career was devoted to nursing and health care.

Cleta was involved with the Congregational Church throughout her life. She was a member of the Norwich Congregational Church as well as the Spring Hill Florida Congregational Church. As an active member of the Vermont Conference of the United Church of Christ, she served on the Board of Directors, was President of the Women’s Fellowship and served on many other committees.

She enjoyed attending a number of National Women’s Gatherings, where she served as coordinator of this event in 1998 and 2002. She chaired two New England Women’s Celebrations and was also a delegate to the General Synod of the United Church of Christ.

Cleta is preceded in death by her father, Donald Pierce. She is survived by her mother, Virginia Pierce of Essex Junction; son, Philip and his wife, Laura of Vashon Island, Wash.; son, Donald and his wife, Dana of Huntsville, Ala.; daughter, Robin Moody and her husband, James of Charlestown, Mass.; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Norwich Congregational Church on Aug. 30 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Cleta’s memory to the Norwich Public Library, the Norwich Congregational Church, or the Spring Hill Florida Congregational Church.
