Annie Sara Eckerman

Newport, N.H. — Annie Sara Eckerman, age 101, of Maple Street, passed away at the New London Hospital surrounded by family and friends, Monday, April 28, 2014.

Annie was born on April 18, 1913, daughter to the late Frank and Grace (Elliot) Chandler. She has lived in Newport since 1960 coming from Enfield, N.H. in 1925 where she lived since she was 12 years old. She attended school in Columbia and Enfield and was a homemaker for 20 years. Her working career included 10 years at the Baltic Mills in Enfield, Brampton and Dorr Woolen Mills in Newport, Western Auto for 10 and Aubuchon Hardware for eight years and sold Avon for 23 years. Annie was a member of the Hopeful Rebekah’s of Newport since 1960, the Ernest Workers Club of Enfield, the Newport VFW and American Legion Auxiliary and of the Mt. Calm Grange, the Sullivan County and National Grange for over 50 years as well as a Golden Chief Member. She served on the Enfield School Board for 10 years and was the recipient of the Boston Post Cane in April 2013

Annie was married to Robert A. Evans, Sr. and they had five children; they divorced in the sixties and he passed in 1986. She married George Eckerman and shared six years until his passing in 1976.

She is survived by two sons: Frederick F. Evans and his wife, Madeline, of Grafton, Richard H. Evans and his wife, Margie, of Niceville, Fla.; a daughter: Linda J.E. Brown and her significant other, Henry Craig, of Newport; a brother: George Laughton and his wife, Sheryl, of Chino Valley, Ariz.; her daughter-in-law: Arlene Evans of Enfield, Cedric Brown of Newport, who was like a dear son to her in recent years; and many, many grand, great and great-great-grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased by her son: Robert A. Evans, Jr. in January this year, her daughter: Marion L. Porter in 2000 and four brothers: Lyle Chandler and Stewart R. “Chick” Chandler, Everett Chandler and Elrick “Pat” Laughton.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 2, 2014 at 2 p.m., at the Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home, 42 Main Street in Newport.

Friends may call on the family from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday evening May 1 at the Funeral Home.

Burial will be at a later date at the Oak Grove Cemetery on Oak Grove Street in Enfield.
