Letter: Sarcasm During Testimony

To the Editor:

I respond to the Dec. 11 testimony of U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sibelius before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Her grace is a shining example of what is missing from demands for answers on the funding of abortion in the Affordable Care Act. John Shimkus, R-Ill., offered to “try to be nice and polite and kind.” His sarcasm in connection with his request to the secretary “to provide him a list of health plans that cover abortion services” was yet one more verbal assault on established rights exclusive to women’s health and stability of the family. It was a clear display of a Congress that has earned the title of “worst ever.” Coming from the “man-ness” of Congress, this was a trying way to gain votes, much less celebrate the holidays. Abortion will not go away; it will be either safe or sorry.
