New London — Robert MacMichael, of Elkins, was recently honored by Lake Sunapee Region VNA and Hospice for his military service.

With his parents’ permission, MacMichael enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and became a member of the 82nd Seabees Battalion.

Seabees build air strips, military bases, miles of roadways, hospitals, and docks. Members of Navy construction battalions, they are named for their initials “C.B.” Their long history of accomplishing myriad vital construction projects began during World War II.

MacMichael, who served from 1943 to 1946, said it was quite an experience for a young small-town boy to be plunged into service abroad. His tour of duty began in Guadalcanal and ended in Okinawa. His memories include converting a large coconut plantation into an airstrip. After the war ended, the 82nd Seabees held a reunion every year until 1995. Robert MacMichael and his wife, Janet, hosted two of the events.

The Lake Sunapee Region VNA & Hospice We Honor Veterans program trains staff and volunteers to better meet the needs of home care and hospice patients who are veterans.
