David Furze Jones

New London, N.H. — David Furze Jones, 85, of New London, died Friday, July 26, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family. His sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was born in Glen Ridge, N.J. on Nov. 9, 1927, to Hildred and Harold Jones. David attended Newark Academy, where he was captain of the championship basketball team. After graduation in 1945, he enlisted in the Navy. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1949, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and the Dragon Society.

David started his business career as a runner on Wall Street for Tucker Anthony. In 1952, he joined Halsey Stuart in New York, and four years later relocated to run their Pittsburgh office. Later he joined Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh, and then moved back to open their New York office.

He and his family lived in Madison, N.J. for 25 years, where he was a Deacon at Grace Episcopal Church and served on the Morristown Memorial Hospital Board. He retired to New London, where he was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, worked at the video store, and volunteered at the New London school system, Meals-on-Wheels, and Woodcrest Village. Throughout his life, David enjoyed sailing on the Content with his father, playing tennis, the Giants and the Yankees, his country, his dogs, but most of all his family.

David is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janet Van Zoeren Jones, who grew up around the corner from his boyhood home. He is also survived by two daughters, Elizabeth West of Sunapee, N.H., and Corinne J. White and her husband, Charles “Bud” White of Durham, N.H.; and their two sons, David White and his wife, Alison, and Christopher White. He was predeceased by two sisters, Virginia Wolf and Priscilla Castle.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Gould Road, New London.
