New London, N.H. — Louis Varga, 92, peacefully passed away at New London Hospital on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, surrounded by his family. “Louie”, as he was known by all, was born in Hungary and immigrated to the United States at age 9. He spent most of his life in Stamford, Conn. learning a new language and culture, and building a career as a master electrician. He retired from the electrical trade at age 68, wintering for some years in Lake Suzy, Fla. before moving to New London in 2001.
Louie believed in work as the highest virtue and the greatest service he could offer. He worked tirelessly throughout his life, on the job for IBEW Local 501 on weekdays and into the night for family, friends and others in need of electrical services. One of his passions and proud accomplishments was building a 41-unit apartment with two friends in Stamford, Conn. He was also proud to have served as a teacher of the electrical trades to high school students at J. M. Wright Technical High School in Stamford. He was passionate about family, friends, politics, history, books and gardening.
He served proudly as an Army sergeant on the European Front in WWII, responsible for communications equipment maintenance.
Louie leaves behind: his lovely bride of 66 years, Nellie; two daughters, Liz Maloof of New London and Susan Varga of Wakefield, R.I.; two sons-in-law, Tom Maloof and Cesare Mitrano; six grandchildren, Gregg, Leslie, Michael, Joshua, Emmah and John; brother, Teddy Varga of New Canaan, Conn. He was predeceased by his brother, Julius Varga of Stamford, Conn.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 18, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of the First Presbyterian Church, 1101 Bedford St., Stamford, CT 06905.
Burial will immediately follow services at Woodland Cemetery, 66 Woodland Place, Stamford, CT 06902.
There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Louis Varga can be made to the Lake Sunapee Region VNA & Hopsice, P.O. Box 2209, New London, NH 03257.
