Allan Meredith Doyle, Jr.

New London, N.H. — Born on Nov. 13, 1929, in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Dorothy Bradford (Ham) and Allan Meredith Doyle, Allan Meredith Doyle, Jr., 84, died peacefully at home in New London on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014. He had battled prostate cancer with determination and grace for 17 years. He grew up in Garden City (N.Y.), graduated from Garden City High School in 1947 and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Union College, Class of 1951. Following a year of graduate school at MIT he worked for Vitro Corporation in NYC during which time he earned an MBA in accounting from Columbia University.

Career opportunities took him to Northampton, Mass. in 1960 where he became Controller of Kollmorgen Corporation and soon thereafter CFO. Kollmorgen grew through many acquisitions in which he was involved and he helped to take the company public (NYSE) in 1978. He retired years later as Vice Chair of the Board. Following his retirement from Kollmorgen, he realized a longtime dream and returned to Union College as Assistant Professor in the MBA program where he taught the capstone course for graduating students.

An avid and accomplished golfer, Allan “found” the game at age ten and it continued to play an important role in his life for the next 75 years. He played varsity golf in both high school and college and won four Club Championships at Longmeadow (Mass.) Country Club along with numerous Member-Guest tournaments. The year 1987 was the highlight of his competitive career. He qualified for the USGA Senior Amateur Championship as medalist with an even par round in the Boston Sectionals. He went on to win his first match at Saucon Valley and, although poor putting lead to his defeat in the second match, it remained a thrill to have played in an official USGA tournament. Serving on the Board of the New Hampshire Golf Association and as a N.H. Rules Official were highlights of his last years of golf. Allan also served on the Boards of the Cherry Valley Club (Garden City), the Longmeadow Country Club and Bay Path College in Longmeadow, Mass., Hartford (Conn.) Stage Company, the Fells (Newbury, N.H.) and for 12 years as Treasurer of the Lake Sunapee Protective Association. He has had memberships in the New York Athletic Club, Columbia College Club (NYC), Cherry Valley Club, Longmeadow Country Club, Lake Sunapee Country Club and, most recently, Baker Hill Golf Club.

Married in 1965, he and his family lived in Longmeadow (Mass.) from 1966 until 1992 when they moved to their home on Lake Sunapee. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary (Baisler) Doyle; two sons, Stephen Bradford (Donna) of South Kingstown, R.I. and Jonathan Marshall (Charlotte) of Amherst, Mass.; as well as four grandchildren, Ian Bradford and Ryan Aileen of R.I. and Thompson Alexander and Geoffrey Allan of Mass.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:30 a.m., May 23, 2014, at Baker Hill Golf Club. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Lake Sunapee Protective Association, P.O Box 683, Sunapee, NH 03782, New London Hospital, 273 County Road, New London, NH 03257, the Upper Valley Humane Society, 300 Old Route 10, Enfield, NH 03748, the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, One Medical Center Drive, HB 7070, Lebanon, NH 03756 or to a charity of one’s choice.
