Robert H. Edson

Jamesville, N.Y. — Robert H. Edson, 45, of Jamesville, died unexpectedly Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, of an apparent heart attack.

Rob is survived by his wife of 17 years, Sue Cornelius Edson, who was his college sweetheart, as well as his children, Thomas, 14 and Tracey, 11, of Jamesville. He was a devoted husband and father and coached both children in the Jamesville DeWitt Youth Athletic Association. Rob was happiest participating in his kids’ sports, school and community events with his family and friends.

Rob was born in Lebanon, N.H., and came to Syracuse in 1986 to attend Syracuse University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in psychology from SU in 1990 and a Master’s degree in sports management from West Virginia University in 1992.

Rob dedicated his professional life to the welfare of student-athletes at two local colleges. After working for 20 years in athletic administration at his alma mater, SU, Onondaga Community College hired Rob as the athletics director in 2011. In that time, he helped develop the brand and visibility of OCC’s athletics program, as well as improve the all-around success of the college’s student-athletes. Earlier this year, Rob was recognized as a 2013 Trustee Award Recipient for his extraordinary service to students and his remarkable contributions to the college in such a short time.

Rob began his career as an intern at SU in 1991 and during his 20-year tenure he worked in virtually all areas of athletic administration including compliance, facilities and finance and team services. His last position at SU was senior associate athletics director for administration and chief financial officer. He also spent much of his career mentoring aspiring administrators.

Rob’s dedication, humility, integrity and work ethic were well-known to colleagues across the country in college athletics. His quick wit, dry sense of humor and ability to keep things in perspective endeared him to all who knew him. Having grown up in New England, Rob was an avid fan of the Red Sox and Patriots. He spent many hours on the sidelines supporting his children and many college student-athletes for whom he advocated.

He was a member of the College Athletic Business Management Association, Collegiate Event and Facility Management Association, American Football Coaches Association, and the National Football Foundation.

Scholarships in Edson’s name have been established at Onondaga Community College and Syracuse University.

In addition to his family, Rob is survived by his parents, Thomas and Raquel Edson of Lebanon, N.H.; his sister, Deborah (Pete) Butler of Vermont; mother and father-in-law, Carol and George Corner of Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Stacey (Frank) Pedicone; brother-in-law, Steve (Wendy) Cornelius; as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Calling hours will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 East Genesee Street, Fayetteville. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hendricks Chapel at SU.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rob’s name to either scholarship fund or the American Heart Association.
