Upper Valley Plaza Shaw’s Store to Close

West Lebanon — The Shaw’s supermarket chain announced Monday that it is closing six stores in New Hampshire, including its store in the Upper Valley Plaza along Route 12A in West Lebanon, saying it has been losing money.

“As a company and as responsible business owners, it is imperative to the overall health and future of the company that we run profitable stores. The stores identified have not been profitable for quite some time, and despite the best efforts of the company and our associates — including recent pricing and marketing initiatives — we have not been able to reposition them to better compete in the marketplace and don’t anticipate being able to change this trend,” Steve Sylven, a spokesman for the Massachusetts-based company, said in a statement.

The other New Hampshire Shaw’s supermarkets targeted for closure include stores in Seabrook, Goffstown, Manchester, Tilton and Keene. The stores will close “no later than Sept. 2,” Sylven said.

Shaw’s also runs a supermarket in the Powerhouse Plaza along Route 12A just north of the Interstate 89 interchange in West Lebanon. Sylven said that store is profitable and will remain open and in his statement added that “we do not have any current plans to close any additional stores at this time.”

Route 12A in West Lebanon is home to several supermarkets, including the remaining Shaw’s store, a Price Chopper, Hannaford and BJ’s.
