Richard A. Wood

West Lebanon, N.H. — Richard A. Wood, 86, died peacefully at his home Monday, Feb. 25, 2013.

He was born Jan. 1, 1927, at the family homestead in Hartland, Vt., the second son of Ralph and Regis (Daley) Wood. Richard grew up on the family farm with his nine siblings. He attended the Hartland School and graduated from Hartford High School class of 1945. He then enlisted in the Army where he served his country in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Upon returning from his service Richard went to work for the US Postal Service where he worked until retiring in 1982. He was particularly fond of his time working on the railroad postal service. He was married to the love of his life Patricia A. Davis, June 19, 1954, at St. Anthony’s Church in White River Junction, Vt. They made their home on the Connecticut River in West Lebanon and were married for 57 years until Patricia’s death in 2011.

Dick was a sportsman in his younger years and enjoyed spending time in nature be it the deep woods of Newfoundland hunting moose or on the family homestead tracking white tail deer. He had a special friendship and fondness for the neighborhood crows. A favorite annual event would be to go camping in Maine with his wife and children. He was a talented artist working in paint, creative woodwork and folk art. His handmade postcards will be missed. He was very creative, with a great sense of humor, and could hold an audience captive in anticipation while sharing his adventures both fact and fiction.

He is predeceased by three brothers John, Raymond, and Jerome and a sister, Rita Kraljevich.

He is survived by his five children, Casey Wood of West Lebanon, Kim Hoffman and husband, Douglas of Las Cruces, N.M., Caleb Wood and wife, Lori of Wilder, Vt., Peter Wood and wife, Mary of Canaan, N.H. and Heather Heriza and husband, Patrick of Haines, Ore.; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Regina Gaudreau of Ludlow, Mass.; four brothers, Mark Wood of Barre, Vt., Paul Wood of Hartland, Thomas Wood of Portsmouth, N.H. and Peter Wood of Conn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, March 7, 2013, at 12 noon at St. Anthony’s Church in White River Junction, followed by burial in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery and a reception back at St. Anthony’s Fellowship Hall.

Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction has been entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed to Dick’s Family at
