Letter: Put-Down Wasn’t Humorous
To the Editor:
Not much could interrupt my morning coffee while reading the newspaper and doing the puzzles. However, using “ladies” in a recent daily Jumble as a put-down, even in a supposedly jesting way, is very bad. It is evil, it is destructive, it is harmful, it is hurtful. It is also a bad example for everyone who reads it.
As frequently testified to in your pages, women suffer daily because of devaluing attitudes toward us.
Had the N-word been used in the Jumble, I expect your editors or proofreaders would have picked up on it and somehow avoided subjecting us to it. I would appreciate your forwarding this letter to the writers and distributors of the Jumble.
