Two Fly Fisherman Rescued From White River in Hartford
Hartford — Two fly fisherman on an island in the White River had to be rescued Friday evening by the Hartford Fire Department when rain caused the water to rise and they could not return to shore.
Capt. Scott Cooney of the fire department said the two men had walked out earlier when the river was low but could not get back because of the fast moving water.
Cooney said fire department received a call around 7:40 of two men calling for help and responded with a boat that was put in the river upstream and floated down to the island where the men got in and were brought ashore.
“They attempted to cross but the water was way too fast,” Cooney said.
The island is in the vicinty of Tigertown Road, Cooney said. He identified the fishermen as Ephraim Shulman of Quechee and Gary Durkee of Norwich. The rescue crew returned to the station around 8:40.
