Letter: All Vets Deserve Our Support
To the Editor:
I take issue with a headline you ran in the June 2 Sunday Valley News: “For ‘True Veterans,’ a Real Home.” Granted, a headline is supposed to make someone buy the paper and read the article. But how do you dare write, “For ‘True Veterans’”? Who is a “true veteran” and what makes that person different and, by inference, better than all the rest? You don’t explain that in the article. Some veterans and their families do complete their tours of duty without obvious physical, fiscal or mental injury, but that doesn’t make them any less deserving of our support and appreciation.
Editor’s Note: The phrase “True Veterans” was set off in quotations in the headline because it was drawn from a comment by John Dulmage, the site coordinator for Veterans Inc., the Bradford facility that was the subject of the article. Here’s the quote, which appears near the end of the story: “We have some really good hearts here, true veterans. These folks here that have chosen the military as a way of life have not done it for reward or recognition. They did it because it was the right thing to do.”
