Letter: To the Aid of a Fellow Soldier
To the Editor:
I have been compelled to act on behalf of my friend, Tom Batchelder, who was the subject of your Oct. 27 article “A Question of Time” about his battle with terminal cancer.
We met in basic training and have been fast friends since. Another buddy of ours, Andy Anderson, recently came to Etna to visit Tom. The three of us had not seen one another in nearly 20 years, yet were able to pick up right where we left off. We had a great visit and plan to do it again very soon.
Your article was so well written, so full of compassion, yet unflinching in its view of the prospect of passing on in general and of Tom’s situation in particular. You may be proud of your staff. One of the things we were taught in the Army is that we always come to the aid of our fellow soldier; this lesson has followed me into my post-Army life. A fund has been set up to help Sammy and Kailyn, his children, after Tom can no longer be with them. People in the community who are interested in helping should visit http://www.youcaring.com/other/tom-s-team-/109486 to make a contribution.
