Letter: Significance of Rubens’ Run

To the Editor:

Great editorial on the way in which Jim Rubens’ announcement that he will run for the Republican nomination to challenge Sen. Jeanne Shaheen might make the Republican Party safe for talking about climate change policy. Indeed Rubens’ support for carbon taxes as an effective, efficient and economical way to fight climate change makes it safe now for Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., to step forward to co-sponsor bipartisan revenue-neutral carbon tax legislation. Rubens’ announcement makes it clear to the GOP that New Hampshire will not countenance a right-wing GOP climate change denier to challenge Ayotte in a future primary. If Ayotte uses this opportunity to speak about climate change and carbon taxes and co-sponsors a carbon tax bill, she and Rubens will both become national climate change heroes.
