West Yarmouth, Mass. — Katherine Garland, 95, passed away in her home at Mayflower Place on Friday, July 18, 2014. She was born Aug. 23, 1918, in Springfield, Mass., the daughter of George W. Rice and Blanche Klakring Rice. A resident of Yarmouth Port, Mass., since 1973, she grew up in Springfield and was a 1935 graduate of Classical High School. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1940 and, in 1941, was married to Gilbert Clayton Garland, who predeceased her in 1999. Prior to their retirement to Yarmouth Port, Kay and Gil and daughters also lived in Weston, Mass. and Duxbury, Mass.
She was the mother of Nancy Lagomarsino of Hanover, N.H., Gail Gilchrest of State College, Pa., and Andrea Douglas of Concord, N.H. She was the grandmother of Jeremy Lagomarsino, Peter Lagomarsino, Alexander Gilchrest, Meredith Gilchrest Schmid, Benjamin Douglas, and Claire Douglas. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law David Lagomarsino and Fred Douglas, her grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Kay lived a full life with courage, humor, generosity of spirit, and action, devoted to the care of her family, most especially during the years she spent providing home care for her husband throughout his Alzheimer’s disease. Gray’s Beach and the boardwalk were a source of joy and peace to them both. She supported the activities of her church, was a talented cook, gardener, and seamstress, engaged in numerous civic projects, and offered inspiration and empathy to friends and family. Gallant to the end, she was loved and will be greatly missed.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the Yarmouth Port Library, or Kelley Chapel, Yarmouth Port. For online condolences, please visit DoaneBealAmes.com.
