Elizabeth Collyer Hayes

Grantham, N.H. — Elizabeth Collyer Hayes, 86, of Eastman, passed away following a brief decline of health at the New London Hospital, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2013.

Bets was born in East Orange, N.J., on April 6, 1927, daughter of the late Frank and Isabel (Huff) Collyer. She grew up in Newark and graduated from Morristown-Beard High School in the Class of 1944. She studied English Literature at Mt. Holyoke College, graduating in 1948. On Oct. 1, 1949, she married Kirby M. Hayes and shared 43 years together until his passing in 1992. They made their home in Amherst, Massachusetts, raising their family there. Bets was actively involved in town, public school and University of Massachusetts activities. Bets and Kirby moved to the Eastman Community in Grantham, in the mid 80’s. Bets was a member of the South Congregational Church in Newport since moving to the area. She continued to be involved in the Mt. Holyoke Alumni Association, and volunteered her time to fundraising for the American Diabetes Association and for David’s House in Lebanon. She held positions on committees at Eastman, and was very well known for sending cards and letters, and making phone calls to family, friends and acquaintances on special occasions.

She is survived by her two daughters: Ellen Hayes Wienberg and her husband, Charlie, of Manchester and their children: Emily and Molly Wienberg; Linda Williams and her husband, Mike, of Freeport, Maine and their children: Meghan, Katie, Colleen and Mikey Williams; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at the South Congregational Church, with the Rev. Craig Cowing officiating. Burial will be private and there will be no calling hours.
