Richard Oakes Rowe

Enfield, N.H. — Richard Oakes Rowe, age 81, died late Wednesday afternoon, July 17, 2013, at his home on Mascoma Lake, after a battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family.

He was born in Framingham, Mass., on July 20th, 1931, to James H. Rowe and Isabel Oakes Rowe.

At a young age, just before World War II, the family moved to Woodsville, N.H., to farm.  Richard graduated in 1949 from Woodsville High School.  He married Leila Williams of Groton, Vt., on April 23, 1950.  He served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1954.

In 1954 they moved to Newbury, Vt. and started their own farm and family.  Life changed when an inmate from the County Jail escaped and burned the James H. Rowe and Sons farm in Woodsville, N.H.  Richard moved his cattle from the Newbury farm, closing it, to what was left of the Woodsville farm.

Soon after, Richard went with N.H. and Vermont Breeders Association, now known as Eastern, moving the family to different circuits in Concord, Tilton/Northfield, Lyme, settling in Enfield, N.H. in the early 60’s. As farms were shutting down Richard had to change careers, although he continued to work on as needed basis even after retirement.   He worked at Super Duper in Lebanon, leaving as Produce Manager, when he and his brother Douglas purchased Route 5 Country Store in White River Junction, Vt.  He has many fond memories that we always talk about.  He loved the store, the regulars, and all of the customers. It was a sad time when he sold his inventory and retired.

Richard is predeceased by his parents; his wife, Leila; and sister, Judy.

He is survived by his daughters, Paula Rowe Stone (Larry), of Enfield, Sandy Rowe Carroll (Perry Fisher), of Lebanon; his grandchildren, Wesley Morse, of Lebanon,  Jennilee Holmes Haber, of Watertown, Mass., and Amber Stone, of Claremont, N.H.  And along the way he additionally had step-grandchildren, Dawn Guerin, of Enfield, and Ron Holmes, of Hartford, Vt.; and their father, his ex-son-in law, Larry Holmes, of Grafton, N.H.  Very special great-grandchildren, Meadow, River and Bailey Chase, of Claremont, and Amanda Guerin, of Enfield.  He leaves siblings, James Rowe, of Castleton, Vt., Mary D’Amico, of Washington, D.C., Douglas Rowe and John Rowe, of Arizona.

A visiting time will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. with a funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 20th, 2013, at the Ricker Funeral Home in Enfield.  Interment will immediately follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Enfield.
