Letter: Predecessor to the Air Force
To the Editor:
I read with interest the article headlined “On Enfield’s Hallowed Ground” in the June 19 Valley News. I commend the time and effort Gordon Clough put in to place a marker on the grave of Sgt. Leo Davio, who served in World War I. It is sad that an eligible member of the Davio family was not available to request a marker from the U.S. government and a substitute had to be found.
Had a government stone been available, it would have shown his service to be with the U.S. Army Air Corps and not “Airforce.” The U.S. Air Force was not established until Sept. 18, 1947.
