Joan Elizabeth (O’Leary) Evans
New London, N.H. — Joan Elizabeth (O’Leary) Evans, 88, of New London passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014.
Born in Medford, Mass. Oct. 21, 1925, Joan was the youngest of five daughters of John and Lillian (McLauflin) O’Leary. She was a graduate of Medford High School, The Burdette School of Business, and the University of New Hampshire School for Lifelong Learning. In 1946, Joan married Robert L. Evans and they eventually moved to Lebanon, N.H. In Lebanon, Joan was active as a volunteer for many organizations, including Head Start, Cub Scouts, and A Better Chance.
In 1972, Joan and Bob moved to New London where Joan sold real estate for many years and was again active as a volunteer for many organizations. These included the League of Women Voters, the New London Historical Society, Summer Music Association, and the Parent/Child Center. She was a member of the New London Baptist Church and sang in the choir for 28 years. Though she enjoyed travelling and spending time at the family home in Drakes Island, Maine, Joan’s favorite place in the world was New London, where she enjoyed her many friends, spending time with family, and summers on Lake Sunapee.
Joan was predeceased by Bob in 1996, and is survived by her four children: Doug Evans (Sandi) of Enfield, N.H.; John Evans (Sandra) of Bath, Maine; Judy Evans Sleeper (Ron) of Quechee, Vt.; and Dan Evans (Cindy) of Lebanon, N.H. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews that were the lucky recipients of her unwavering affection.
The Chadwick Funeral Home in New London is in charge of arrangements, and a memorial service will be held at the New London Baptist Church on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. Burial services will be held at a later date at the West Part Cemetery in New London. Memorial contributions can be made to the Lake Sunapee VNA Parent/Child Center.
