Corinth Kicks Off 250th Anniversary With Chili Contest

Corinth — Corinth turns 250 this year, and the town will celebrate with a series of free events, starting with a chili cook-off to benefit the East Corinth Volunteer Fire Department. The contest is set for Saturday from 5-7 p.m. at East Corinth Congregational Church. Registration is free, and admission is by donation. The winner takes home the champion’s apron.

The town was chartered on Feb. 4, 1764, by Gov. Benning Wentworth.

Jane Conner, a member of the Corinth 250 planning team, said volunteers are are especially needed to lend a hand with events planned for Old Home Days, Aug. 15-17. The details are still being firmed up, but brochures will be available at the Town Hall, Blake Memorial Library and other locations as the dates approach.

Conner said she’s looking forward to seeing people celebrate together.

“The town has such a great sense of community,” and residents turn out in the hundreds for various occasions, she said. “It’s so fun to see people get together and kind of rally around.”

Other 250th events include the following: birthday cake at Town Meeting, March 4, noon, Town Hall; baked bean supper, April 12, 5 p.m., Town Hall; book and plant sale, May 24-25, 8 a.m.-3 p.m., Blake Memorial Library; self-guided tour of historic buildings, with brochures available at Town Hall and Blake Memorial Library, May 24 through Columbus Day; Memorial Day Service, May 26, 6 p.m., Corinth Center Cemetery; garden tour, June 28, noon-5 p.m., starting at Blake Memorial Library; Independence Day parade and barbecue, July 4, 10 a.m., East Corinth Village and fairground; Old Home Day events, Aug. 15-17 at the fairground and throughout town; Labor Day event sponsored by Corinth Historical Society, Sept. 1, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Agricultural and Trades Museum, Village Road., East Corinth; Vermont North by Hand open studio weekend, Oct. 4-5, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Town Hall and artists’ studios; traditional New England dance, with calling by David Millstone, Nov. 14, 7 p.m., Town Hall; cookie swap and historical music performance, Dec. 13, 3 p.m., Town Hall.
