Letter: Civility Essential to Democracy

To the Editor:

There have been a number of letters recently concerning the use of animals in circuses in response to a feature article that appeared in the Valley News.

I can understand the point of view of those who object to such treatment of animals and I fully support their right to express that point of view. But I cannot see the need to attack personally and castigate anyone who does not agree or simply has not considered that viewpoint.

In a democratic society, the ability to see the other’s point of view and approach discussion civilly is essential. I do appreciate the Forum.
