Man Who Shot Self in Head, Torched House, Charged

Vershire — A 53-year-old man who was hospitalized after shooting himself in the head and setting fire to the home where he was living was criminally charged yesterday for the incident, Vermont State Police said.

Colin Barry is scheduled to appear in Orange Superior Court on Dec. 5 to answer to charges of arson and reckless endangerment for the Nov. 14 incident.

According to police, Barry had been living at his ex-wife’s home on Vershire Center Road for two weeks when he set fire to the house and then shot himself in the head in a bedroom.

He went outside and collapsed, where he was found by a passing driver. The home suffered damage but was not destroyed.

Authorities have not released information about Barry’s medical condition.
