Charlestown — A head-on collision Thursday morning on Route 12 sent two people to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to police, Kevin Martel, 23, of Walpole, N.H., was driving a 2002 Jeep Cherokee southbound when he crossed the centerline and collided with a 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by Melodie Curtis, 50, of Claremont.

The accident occurred north of Lovers Lane in front of the entrance to Design Standards Corp.

Curtis’ vehicle, with significant front end damage, came to rest in the southbound lane while the Jeep veered slightly off the road and stopped on the shoulder on the southbound side.

Curtis and Martel, the only occupants in the vehicles, were extricated by fire department personnel and transported via helicopter to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center with serious injuries, police said.

A hospital spokeswoman said Thursday evening Martel was in satisfactory condition. The spokeswoman said she was not authorized to provide information on Curtis’ condition.

The section of road between Lovers Lane to the south and Old Claremont Road to the north was closed for about two hours.

State Police worked at the scene to “diagram the accident,” and the Charlestown Fire Department cleaned the roadway.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors, police said.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Raymond Gosettis of the Charlestown Police Department at (603) 826-5747.
