Charlestown Releases Third History Book

Charlestown — A new 561-page book about Charlestown’s history will be available starting Saturday. Third History of Charlestown, New Hampshire focuses on the period spanning 1950 to 2009.

The town’s Heritage Commission came up with the idea for the black-and-white book several years ago, said Joyce Higgins, who is the commission’s chairwoman and a member of the Charlestown Historical Society.

Last year, voters approved a warrant article to publish the book, which features new writing by town residents and material from the historical society archives.

“We were building on the shoulders of what others have done,” said Higgins, the book’s primary author and editor.

The hardcover volume includes genealogies, maps, photographs, a list of war veterans, house histories and deed research. Some of the historical information is new.

“As the years pass, more information comes to light, and we have included information that’s 200 years old but was not included in our first two histories,” Higgins said. The new information is “largely a matter of arcane interest,” such as the early earmarks of farm animals, which may be helpful for those researching their ancestries.

The cost is $40, plus $5 shipping. To order a copy, send a check or money order to Third History of Charlestown, Town of Charlestown, P.O. Box 385, Charlestown, NH 03603. The two earlier books, History of Charlestown, New Hampshire, by Henry Hamilton Saunderson, and Second History of Charlestown, N.H., by Martha McDanolds Frizzell, are also available for $30, and $20, respectively, plus $5 shipping.

Starting June 17, the new book will be sold Mondays from 1-4 p.m. in the Community Room under Silsby Public Library; Tuesdays, from 9 a.m.-noon in the Charlestown Historical Society Archives Room, Town Hall; weekdays from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Town Offices; and at the Fort at No. 4.
