Richmond School Principal Set to Retire
Hanover — The Dresden School District will begin its fourth principal search in three years now that Richmond Middle School principal Jim Nourse announced he will retire at the end of this school year.
Nourse, 63, is entering his seventh year as middle school principal and he’s been an educator for 36 years. Nourse was previously the principal of Lebanon High School for three years and for six years served as the director of the Upper Valley Teacher Institute, now known as the Upper Valley Educator Institute.
In the last few years, the schools in Hanover and Norwich have concluded many principal searches.
Ray School principal Matt Laramie started his first year in 2011, and last year, Bill Hammond became principal of the Marion Cross School and Justin Campbell started as principal at Hanover High School.
At Monday night’s Dresden School Board meeting, Superintendent Frank Bass presented a schedule for a principal search committee that would end in December.
It’s Bass’ hope to have a new principal named by the first of the year in order that the search doesn’t coincide with the budget process.
Plus, Bass said he’d like to interview the best principal candidates before they’re scooped up by other principal searches in the area.
One likely candidate will be Mike Lepene, the associate principal at the middle school.
Lepene is starting his sixth year as associate principal at the school and said Tuesday that he’s “absolutely interested” in the position and would be applying.
Nourse said he plans to continue to live in Lyme, and is looking forward to spending more time with his four grandchildren. And while he said he’s ready to slow down, he’s not yet ready to leave education.
He’d like to continue to work in the field, but as for what he’ll be doing in the future, Nourse said he hasn’t sat down and outlined a plan.
“Right now, 400 students will walk into the door tomorrow at a quarter ‘til eight, and that’s where my focus is,” Nourse said Tuesday as he prepared for the first day of school, which starts today.
