School Board Seat Turns in Hanover

Hanover — Erika Finlayson has once again stepped down from the Hanover School Board, and will be replaced by a parent who has been active in Hanover’s elementary school.

Finlayson’s husband, Samuel, has been named the new chairman of the department of surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Finlayson has five children in the school district and the family will be moving to Salt Lake City later this summer. Her husband has recently worked as the director of the center for surgery and public health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

This is the second time Finlayson has resigned from the school board. Finlayson was elected to the school board in 2008, but resigned in September 2011 when her husband’s job situation changed.

But she reapplied when a position opened up last fall and was reelected handily in March .

Finlayson said she didn’t hear about her husband’s new job until after the election.

“It’s hard to say goodbye to Hanover and the community, and the schools are terrific,” Finlayson said. “There’s a lot of exciting things happening at the schools and I wish I could be a part of it, but I will have to watch from afar.”

Finlayson has been replaced by Mimi Lichtenstein, who has children in the first, third and fifth grades at the Ray School. Lichtenstein, 43, has lived in Etna for eight years. She has a Master of Business Administration in finance and entrepreneurship and has a background in accounting.

Lichtenstein, whose appointment lasts until March, has served as a room parent at the Ray School and attended public meetings with potential principal candidates during the search for current principal Matt Laramie.

She also helped organize a literacy night at the Ray School, an event where students are invited to come to the school after hours and play games that will make them excited about reading. She said she is looking forward to helping with the implementation of full-day kindergarten and learning about curriculum development.
