Man Charged With Assault After Bar Fight

A Claremont man is scheduled to appear in court today to answer to charges that he repeatedly punched an unconscious man in the face after the men got into an argument at The Cave bar over a woman.

Wesley Vorhes, 47, allegedly beat his friend Robert Schneider so severely that Schneider, 47, suffered a fractured nose, cheek bone, upper jaw and orbital eye socket, police said.

The injuries will necessitate reconstructive surgery and caused nerve damage that may never fully heal.

Vorhes is scheduled to be arraigned in Windsor Superior Court today on a felony charge of aggravated assault.

On Jan. 13, Schneider said he got into an argument with Vorhes when Vorhes, his sister’s boyfriend, was “being intimate with another female at the bar,” while they were drinking at The Cave in Lebanon, police said.

After leaving the bar, the two men were in a car driven by Robert Johnson when Vorhes grew “out of control,” police said. Johnson pulled over on the side of Interstate 89 in Hartford.

Vorhes and Schneider, a White River Junction resident, began arguing again. Vorhes knocked Schneider unconscious, and then lifted him up and repeatedly punched him in the face, police said.

Vorhes was arrested on Sunday, and could not be reached for comment.
