Ex-Hartford Selectman Also Facing Federal Drug Allegation

A former Hartford selectman charged this week with possessing marijuana may have been involved in trafficking prescription drugs while he served on the Selectboard, federal court documents indicate.

Reginald Tatro, who served a single two-year term, already was facing a federal charge of possessing pills with the intent to sell when he was arrested on Tuesday at his home. He is in federal custody after a judge ruled that he violated conditions of release stemming from a 2010 federal drug charge, the documents show.

Tatro had struck a plea deal in August with federal prosecutors and had been scheduled to be sentenced in U.S. District Court in Burlington on Jan. 14. But Tatro was found in possession of marijuana and firearms inside his Route 14 home on Tuesday, which put him in violation of his federal conditions of release, according to federal court documents.

Hartford Police Capt. Brad Vail said that federal agents took Tatro into custody, although it was unclear where he was being held.

In September 2010, federal authorities confiscated a Priority Mail package sent to Tatro from a man listed only as “Richard,” in Cape Coral, Fla, according to federal court documents. A police canine sniffed the package and indicated it contained drugs.

Authorities obtained a search warrant, and found 100 hydrocodone pills, according to court documents.

The documents say that Hartford police officer Dennis Coughlin told federal authorities that an informant who had been reliable told him that Tatro had been “trafficking in contraband prescription pain medication pills,” for at least the past year, and had been receiving the drugs from out-of-state suppliers.

If the informant’s account was accurate, it would overlap with the period when Tatro was serving on the Selectboard — he was on the board from March 2008 to March 2010, when he narrowly lost a re-election bid.

His troubles grew this week.

Hartford police said that information gleaned from a routine traffic stop on Monday led them to obtain a search warrant of Tatro’s home, where they found a “large sum of cash,” along with drug paraphernalia and several firearms.
