William Joseph Fortier, Jr.
Pike, N.H. — William Joseph Fortier, Jr., 92, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at the Hanover Terrace Healthcare, Hanover, N.H.
He was born in Newbury, Vt., April 3, 1920, a son of William and Viola (Jesseman) Fortier, Sr. After his family moved to Pike, he attended Pike Grammar School and graduated from Haverhill Academy Class of 1938, and after his tour of duty in the military, from Industrial Technical School in Boston, Mass. in 1947.
William served in the United States Navy from Sept. 17, 1940, to Nov. 8, 1946, when he was honorably discharged as a Chief Boatswain Mate.
During his working life he worked for Pat Boudreault Plumbing and Heating as a licensed plumber, electrician and heating installer. He also liked to do refrigeration work. He later entered a partnership as co-owner of Grafton Fuel Inc. in Haverhill, where he was able help build a successful heating and fuel business.
After many years of hard work, he and his partner decided to sell the business to Bradford Oil Company where he continued to work as Service Manager until his retirement in 1987. He then worked part time for Royal Electric for a few years before fully retiring.
William enjoyed the outdoors and loved to ride his Harley, fly his own airplane and various ultralight aircraft, camping, hunting, and fishing. He loved music and played the piano and the organ. His favorite instrument was the harmonica which he played for many people for their birthdays, in person or over the phone, when he couldn’t get out to see them.
William was a lifetime member and Past Commander of Haverhill Memorial VFW Post # 5245 of North Haverhill, and was a member of Ross-Wood American Legion Post # 20 of Woodsville. He was also a communicant of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Woodsville and had formerly served on the Parish Council.
He married Dorothy Marie Cochran of New Orleans, La. on Feb. 4, 1944, and they were together until her death on July 28, 2012.
He was also predeceased by his parents, William and Viola Fortier, Sr.; a sister, Bettina Cohun; a brother, Wendell Fortier; and a grandson, Joseph Carr.
William is survived by his two sons, Wayne H. Fortier and wife, Sandy of Woodsville, N.H., and James G. Fortier, and wife Jeri of Pike; a daughter, Janet Locklin and husband, Will of Tulare, Calif.; seven granddaughters; one great granddaughter and five great grandsons; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
There will be no calling hours.
A graveside service will be on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the Ladd Street Cemetery, Haverhill, N.H.
