William E. Merrill
Meredith, N.H. — William E. Merrill, 84, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at the Golden View Health Care Center in Meredith. He was born one of 11 children of Walter and Florence (George) Merrill in Alexandria. The family resided in East Hebron where William grew up. He attended school in Hebron and later graduated from Plymouth High School. Following graduation he entered the US Army, serving during WWII. After his return he went on to graduate from Plymouth Teachers College with a degree in Education.
In 1954, he began a 20 year career teaching in Lebanon, N.H. He was a coach of football, basketball, and baseball teams for Lebanon High School. After retiring, he moved to Hawaii for three years. While there, he established a branch of the University of Hawaii in his city of residence. He returned to New Hampshire in 1977, and served for 12 years as the Assistant Superintendent for the Somersworth School District.
William was an avid reader and in his free time he enjoyed participating in Civil War roundtables.
Family members include one daughter, Robin Michel of Leesville, La.; two sons, Jay Merrill of Sunapee, and David Merrill of E. Corinth, Vt.; three grandchildren; two sisters, Marilyn Dunnet of Meredith and Glenna Clifford of Plymouth; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Hebron Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the N.H. Education Association, 9 South Spring St., Concord, N.H. 03301.
