Nuts and Bolts: 2014 BMW 435i
Bottom line: The 2014 BMW 435i is a wonderful toy for people who have the money, time and place (preferably a racetrack, seriously) to enjoy it.
Ride, acceleration and handling: The car performs so remarkably well in all three areas, it is enough to make the most cynical of BMW cynics a true believer.
Head-turning quotient: Hot and attractive.
Body style, layout: The BMW 4-Series is a front-engine luxury sports coupe available with rear-wheel drive or the tested all-wheel drive. Its two main demarcations are 428i and 435i, denoting engine packages. Its trim levels include Luxury, Sport and M Sport.
Engine/transmission: The 435i comes standard with a 3-liter, twin-turbocharged (forced air), direct-injection, 24-valve in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine with variable valve timing. That engine delivers 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The engine is attached to an eight-speed automatic transmission that also can be operated manually via paddle shifters mounted left and right beneath the steering wheel.
Capacities: There are comfortable seats for the driver and front-seat passenger. Two small people can squeeze in the rear. Cargo space is minor, enough for several soft-pack overnight bags. The fuel tank holds 15.8 gallons (premium-grade gasoline is required).
Mileage: I averaged 28 miles per gallon in mostly highway driving.
Safety: Standard equipment includes front and rear ventilated disc brakes; four-wheel anti-lock brake protection; emergency braking assistance; electronic brake-force distribution; emergency braking preparation; automatic brake drying; stability and traction control; dusk-sensing, self-leveling high-intensity-discharge headlamps; and front and side air bags.
Pricing: Pricing for the 435i starts at $46,000, with a dealer’s invoice price of $42,320. The price including the Sport package and its myriad options is $59,525, including a $925 factory-to-dealer transportation charge. The dealer’s price as tested is $55,140.
