Cottage Hospital Laboratory Receives Accreditation
Woodsville — Cottage Hospital’s main clinical laboratory has received accreditation from the College of American Pathologists, the hospital announced last week.
The accreditation was based on a recent onsite inspection that analyzed records and quality control procedures for the prior two years. The laboratory inspection program is equal to, and in some cases more stringent than, the U.S. government’s own inspection program, the hospital said in a news release.
“Since most of what happens in pathology takes place ‘behind the scenes,’ it is often easy to overlook its criticality,” Lori Hughes, Cottage Hospital’s chief nursing officer, said in the release.
“Providing highly accurate, guideline-compliant pathology services paves the way for lower health care costs, more effective treatments and better patient outcomes.” Joan McIntire, the laboratory’s director, praised the efforts of the hospital’s staff for working to put the processes and systems in place to achieve accreditation. “Quality systems occur by design,” she said in the release, “with the right combination of experience, knowledge of regulations and perseverance.”
