Nuts and Bolts: 2015 Honda Fit EX
Bottom line: The Honda Fit would give anything in the subcompact car category a serious run for the money, including the 2015 edition of the highly touted Volkswagen Golf. Shop and compare.
Ride, acceleration and handling: It gets good marks in all three — another highly recommended daily commuter.
Head-turning quotient: The exterior is quirky. Critics call it “dorky.” But it is sensible in terms of function — aerodynamic and city-fit in terms of parking and maneuverability. The interior is ergonomically sensible and comfortable, done with high-quality materials and excellent fit and finish.
Body style/layout: The Honda Fit is a front-engine, front-wheel-drive subcompact car of unit-body construction. It has four side doors and a rear hatch. There are three Honda Fit gasoline models — base Fit, Fit Sport and top-of-the-line Fit EX. There is also an all-electric Fit EV.
Engine/transmission: The 2015 Honda Fit is equipped with a 1.5-liter, 16-valve direct-injection in-line four-cylinder gasoline engine with variable valve timing (130 horsepower, 114 pound-feet of torque). A six-speed manual transmission is standard. A continuously variable automatic that also can be operated manually via steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters is optional.
Capacities: Seating is for five people. Cargo capacity with rear seats up is 20.6 cubic feet. With rear seats down, it is 57.3 cubic feet. The fuel tank holds 10.6 gallons of gasoline (regular grade is recommended).
Mileage: I averaged 40 miles per gallon in highway driving.
Safety: Standard equipment includes ventilated front disc brakes and rear drum brakes, four-wheel anti-lock brake protection, emergency braking assistance, stability and traction control, and side and head air bags.
Pricing: The price of the 2015 Honda Fit EX with continuously variable automatic transmission starts at $18,235, with an estimated dealer’s invoice price of $17,000. Price as tested is $19,025, including a factory-to-dealer transportation charge of $790.
