A 71-year-old Lebanon man faces multiple charges of felony sex assault for allegedly raping three different underage girls during the past several years, according to Lebanon Circuit Court documents.

Donald S. Hamel was ordered held on $100,000 cash bail after appearing in Lebanon Circuit Court yesterday to answer to the charges. He was not required to enter a plea.

The investigation began only last week and unfolded quickly, Lebanon Police Lt. Phil Roberts said, when someone came to the police with information. Police are still examining Hamel’s past, Roberts said.

Roberts said the alleged assaults occurred as far back as seven years ago. According to court documents, the timeframe when the acts occurred ended only in recent weeks.

The victims are now 7, 11, and 13 years old. They did not know each other and the assaults were not related, Roberts said.

As a general practice, the Valley News does not identify victims of alleged sex crimes.

Hamel, who has no criminal record, is scheduled to return to Lebanon Circuit Court next week.

Court documents that would provide more information about the charges and investigation have been sealed.

Hamel’s public defender, Adam Hescock of Orford, did not respond to a message yesterday morning.

No one answered at Hamel’s home on Riverdale Parkway, a quiet residential street by the Northern Rail Trail.

If he posts bail, Hamel was ordered to avoid having contact with the alleged victims and anyone else under 18 years old.

Aggravated sex assault carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

While the statute of limitations for most felonies in New Hampshire is six years, for sex assault cases in which the victim is underage, charges can be filed until the victim’s 40th birthday.
