Dartmouth Rape Suspect Posts Bail
Lebanon — A Dartmouth College student charged with raping a female student after entering her dorm room had his scheduled court appearance yesterday delayed for a month to allow his attorney more time to review evidence in the case.
Facing four counts of aggravated sex assault, Parker C. Gilbert, 20, was scheduled to appear in Lebanon Circuit Court yesterday, but his attorney secured a 30 day extension to evaluate the evidence.
Gilbert, from London and a member of the college rugby team, allegedly entered the 19-year-old victim’s room in the early morning hours of May 2. The female student filed a complaint with authorities.
Gilbert posted $75,000 bail, but is no longer on campus, Hanover Police Capt. Frank Moran, the department’s acting chief, said in an interview yesterday.
Gilbert’s attorney, George Ostler of Norwich, declined to comment yesterday.
Judge Albert Cirone ordered Gilbert to surrender his British passport, according to court documents.
In an interview yesterday, Moran said investigators plan to interview 30 to 40 people in connection with the case.
“It’s still active,” Moran said.
Several court documents are under seal.
Police said they arrested Gilbert in his dorm room without incident, and then executed a search warrant in his room. Police say they plan to execute additional search warrants in connection with the case.
(In New Hampshire, people charged with felonies do not enter pleas unless they are indicted by a grand jury, a process that can take several weeks.)
As a general practice, the Valley News does not identify victims of alleged sex crimes.
Green Key Weekend Arrests
Also at Dartmouth, Moran said the department recorded 13 alcohol offense arrests, and taken six people into protective custody during the Green Key weekend festivities, one of the campus’s busiest social weekends. Last year, 17 people were arrested during Green Key weekend, according to the student newspaper The Dartmouth.
