Plainfield — An 82-year old woman was killed and three others injured in a head-on collision last night on a snow-covered Route 12A.
Police did not release the woman’s name last night because family members had not yet been contacted, Plainfield Police Chief Paul Roberts said.
The two-vehicle crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. on a slight curve about 100 yards north of Ferry Hill Road, just past Town Line Equipment.
Roberts said at the scene it appeared that the woman’s 1989 Volvo station wagon crossed the center line and into the path of a Saab, which was traveling south. The driver of the Saab, Gavin Davis, 51, and his passengers, Patrick Skehan, 57, and Rory Skehan, 19, were transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.
Roberts said both Skehans were treated and released while Davis was still being assessed. “He was alert and talking to us,” Roberts said.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Roberts also said the impact forced a load of items, including a table, in the back of the Volvo to shift forward and was a contributing factor in the woman’s death.
The woman was helping a friend move from New York, Roberts said. Roberts said both vehicles, which sustained major front end damage, were towed and will be impounded and examined to see if there were any mechanical malfunctions. Besides Plainfield police and fire departments, others responding included Lebanon and Windsor fire departments, Cornish Rescue, Windsor and Lebanon ambulance and State Police from Keene.
