White River Junction — A 50-year-old White River Junction man faces multiple charges in connection with Thursday’s robbery of the Maple Street branch of People’s United Bank, police said yesterday.

John T. Fenley Jr. was arrested Friday after police found thousands of dollars of stolen money in his possession and at his Chambers Lane home, Hartford police Capt. Brad Vail said.

Fenley faces charges of grand larceny, bank robbery and attempted bank robbery.

In a news release issued at 2 a.m. Saturday, Hartford police said they searched and seized Fenley’s vehicle on Friday and later obtained a search warrant for his home, where they found more than $2,000 of “stolen money ... as well as clothing that matched the clothing worn by the bank robber.”

Police said a man wearing a red hat, taped-on mustache and long wig entered the People’s United Bank branch at the intersection of Route 4 and Route 5 at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The man said he had a gun, but didn’t show one.

After being given money, the man left the bank and got into the passenger seat of a blue Chevy Silverado, Vail said. The truck then drove off. Earlier in the day, police said, the same man also went into the Mascoma Savings Bank branch on Sykes Mountain Avenue, but left without incident.

Vail did not indicate last night that it was Fenley who entered either bank. However, because Fenley was allegedly involved in the incident in which a male subject entered a bank while wearing a disguise, police said Fenley faces a charge of attempted bank robbery.

Vail said police first made contact with Fenley on Friday morning at his trailer home on Chambers Lane, about a mile from the scene of the robbery. He was arrested at about 10 that night.

Fenley is being held at Southeast State Correctional Facility in Springfield, Vt., in lieu of $100,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in Windsor Superior Court on Tuesday. Fenley has prior criminal records in Vermont and elsewhere, Vail said.

Police are seeking an arrest warrant for a second suspect who lives out of state, Vail said.
