Bond Issue, Local Tax On Monday Meeting Agenda
Hartford — Town residents will have the opportunity tomorrow to hear the specifics of three articles likely up for vote at this year’s Town Meeting.
Hartford’s annual information night will begin at 7 p.m. in the Hartford High School auditorium, where officials will provide information on a proposed $8.85 million joint bond issue between the town and school, upgrades to the Municipal Building in White River Junction and what could eventually become a 1 percent rooms and meals tax.
The joint bond issue combines several projects meant to make large-scale improvements to athletic and recreational facilities on school and town land. The projects would include a building out of the Maxfield property on Route 5, $2.5 million worth of upgrades to the Wendell A. Barwood Arena and artificial turf on and a track around the Hartford High School football field.
The planned upgrades to the Municipal Building, according to Selectboard Chairman Ken Parker, are not yet completed, but residents at tomorrow’s meeting will have the opportunity to hear a committee’s recommendations for bonding.
And Parker will present a proposed change to the town charter that would give the Selectboard the power to impose an additional 1 percent local sales tax that would affect rooms and meals at hotels and restaurants in town. If this passes at Town Meeting, the board would still have to vote on whether it would actually want to impose the tax.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and members of the high school choir will perform before the event begins. There will be a question-and-answer session from 8-9 p.m.
Another information night will be held before Town Meeting, at candidates night on Feb. 25, Parker said.
