Claremont — A 29-year-old math teacher at Stevens High School is facing sexual-assault charges after having an “inappropriate relationship” with a 14-year-old girl, police said Friday.

Christopher LeBlanc, who also works part-time at the Claremont Community Center, was arrested at 5:30 p.m. Friday and charged with three counts of felonious sexual assault, a felony punishable by 3 1/2 to 7 years in prison for each count, according to a press release from Claremont police.

School Board Chairman Richard Seaman said the board was made aware of the situation on Friday.

“I was absolutely shocked and disappointed,” Seaman said in an interview on Friday evening. “It is of utmost importance that we provide a safe environment and place for our children.”

LeBlanc, who has filled his teaching role for a “relatively short period of time,” Seaman said, has been placed on paid administrative leave.

He said he didn’t know how the school district became aware of the allegations, or if the victim was a Stevens High student.

Calls to Principal Frank Sprague and Superintendent Middleton McGoodwin weren’t returned by deadline.

Police Chief Alex Scott said the charges, commonly known as statutory rape, followed a “short investigation,” but that he could not comment on the case.

Authorities and the Stevens High administration had been investigating an “allegation of a possible inappropriate relationship between an employee of Stevens High and a minor,” leading to the charges, the release said.

Leblanc, a Claremont resident, has worked as a math teacher at Stevens High, and is also a part-time employee of the city of Claremont at the Claremont Community Center, Scott said.

Leblanc was working with Stevens High boys basketball players in December to improve their physical conditioning, according to a Valley News story.

Leblanc is being held at the Sullivan County House of Corrections and will be arraigned Monday in Claremont District Court, authorities said.
