SOUTH ROYALTON — They may be representing the new school on the block, but the White River Valley School girls basketball team already has a grasp of history.

Riding Toni Turner’s double-double, the seventh-seeded Wildcats won their school’s first VPA Division III tournament game on Wednesday night, overturning No. 10 Williamstown, 55-45. Turner grabbed the moment for White River Valley (10-9), scoring 12 points, adding 16 rebounds and keying what coach Tim Perreault called a strong night on defense.

“Even through we gave up 45 points, our defense was fairly good,” Perreault said. “We kept shifting our defense. … Toni did a super job rebounding and not giving up second opportunities. She closed down the paint and forced them to shoot outside.

“It’s a big win,” Perreault added. “The girls were pumped to host a playoff game, and then to win one.”

Sarah Howe notched a game-high 16 points for the Wildcats, who gradually pulled away after taking a 10-8 lead after one quarter. Sylvie Coltey had nine points, Sophie Howe contributed seven and Hannah White buried two 3-pointers on a six-point evening. Macie Carbino netted WRV’s remaining points.

White River Valley visits No. 2 Thetford for a D-III quarterfinal on Friday night.

Enosburg Falls 68Hartford 35

ENOSBURG FALLS, Vt. — The 15th-ranked Hurricanes (5-16) wrapped up their first season with coach Heidi Bushway by dropping a first-round VPA Division II state tournament game to the second-ranked Hornets.

Sophie Burns led Enosburg with 14 points on a night when all of the Hornets who played scored. Kennedy Mullen had a game-high 15 points for the Canes, who lose just two seniors — Isabella Lukowitz and Bianca Severance — to graduation.

Danville 42, Rivendell 25

DANVILLE, Vt. — The sixth-ranked Indians overcame a slow start to eliminate the 11th-ranked Raptors (4-16) from the VPA Division IV tournament and close out coach Dennis Fitzgerald’s first season at the helm.

Rivendell loses five seniors: Leah Rutherford, Jenna Gilbert, Casey Ghio, Emily Hebb and Shaunna Simmons.

Watkinson 55, KUA 51

HARTFORD, Conn. — The Wildcats’ season came to a close in the quarterfinals of the NEPSAC Class C tournament. Kimball Union finishes at 12-12.

Boys Basketball Websterville 53, MVCS 50

QUECHEE — Hunter Cooper capped off the Eagles’ regular season in fine fashion, scoring a season-high 15 points in Mid Vermont Christian’s narrow loss to Websterville Baptist.

The visitors used an 18-13 final period to wrestle a victory away from the Eagles, who held a 37-35 lead through three quarters. Daniel Roberts had 13 points, Josh King netted 12 and Cade Paquette contributed seven for MVCS.

The Eagles will open next week’s VPA Division IV state tournament on the road.

Lamoille 71, Thetford 57

HYDE PARK, Vt. — Already assured of the third seed in next week’s VPA Division III state tournament, the Panthers (14-5) came out flat and never caught the D-II Lancers (12-7).

“Everybody through it was a ‘whatever’ game, and nobody showed up to play,” Thetford coach Jason Gray said. “You can’t give a team with five guys between 6 feet and 6-6 that much of a lead and try to fight back.”

Lamoille grabbed a double-digit lead in the first quarter and spent the night gradually stretching it out. Eli Dunnet scored 14 points, Owen Deffner had 13 and Alex Emerson had 12 for the Panthers.

Lake Region 59, Oxbow 36

ORLEANS, Vt. — The Olympians (8-11) again had more success outside the 3-point arc than inside in a loss to the Rangers.

Oxbow potted nine 3-pointers on the night, with Seth Carson and Jace Page burying three apiece. Carson had a team-high 10 points, while Page and Matt Emerson added nine each.

The O's host Lamoille on Saturday to close the regular season.

Boys Hockey Hartford 6, Northfield 2

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Linemates Jake Derosier, Bentley Boonyaharn and Kyle Hamilton combined on three second-period goals to help the Hurricanes (7-11-2) close out their regular season victoriously.

Charlie Scribner gave Hartford a 1-0 lead after one period before the Canes’ high-scoring trio got to work. Derosier doubled the lead on passes from Boonyaharn and Hamilton; when Northfield (3-16-1) erased that deficit, Derosier received assists from his mates to put Hartford ahead to stay. Hamilton made it 4-2 within the next 90 seconds, with his linemates both assisting.

Colton Allen and Jacob Dwinell added third-period goals for Hartford. Dwinell and A.J. DeBois had assists and goalie Ross McFate finished with 14 saves. The Canes learn their VPA Division II tournament assignment on Thursday.

KUA 1, Gunnery 0

KEENE, N.H. — The second-seeded Wildcats (28-4-2) couldn’t capitalize on eight power plays, but Seth Stadheim made that moot by scoring only goal of Kimball Union’s NEPSAC Stuart/Corkery Tournament quarterfinal with less than two minutes to play.

Sullivan Mack and Zach Whitehead set up Stadheim on a rush, and the former Hanover High forward beat the Gunnery netminder with 1:56 left on the clock. Veeti Kohvakka did the rest, finishing with an 18-save shutout.

The two-time defending NEPSAC open-tournament champions host Lawrence Academy in a semifinal at Akerstrom Arena at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Girls Hockey Stowe 5, Hartford 0

STOWE, Vt. — Zoe Pfeiffer and Jacqueline Gour combined on 35 saves as the Hurricanes concluded a 2-16-2 campaign.

The VPA plans to take its three regular-season divisions and produce two state tournaments. Hartford will play in the D-II draw and will learn its opening opponent on Thursday morning.

Alpine Skiing Gebhardt, Wasps win districts

PERU, Vt. — With Kelly Gebhardt leading the way, the Woodstock girls won the Southern District title at Bromley on Tuesday.

Gebhardt swept to wins in both individual races, claiming the giant slalom in a two-run time of 58.20 seconds and taking the slalom in 1:18.26, topping teammate Alice Sperber by more than 5 seconds. Taylor Blodorn was fifth and Maggie Parker 10th in the slalom for Woodstock; Sperber, Abigail Masillo and Blodorn were 3-4-7 in the GS.

Aaron Wilson had the best day for the Woodstock boys, who placed third behind Burr & Burton and MSJ. Wilson took second in the GS (56.96) behind BBA’s Blake Grewene (54.09) and was third in the slalom (1:15.81) behind Greene (1:08.54) and Woodstock teammate Peter Borden (1:09.97).

Tait Linehan was 14th in the GS and 21st in the slalom to lead Thetford. Alex Huepler claimed 18th in the GS for Hartford’s best result.

Woodstock heads next to the VPA state championships, scheduled for next week at Burke Mountain.

Women’s Lacrosse BC 20, Dartmouth 10

NEWTON, Mass. — Sam Apuzzo scored eight times as Boston College (5-0), ranked No. 1 in the country, rolled past Dartmouth (1-3) at Newton Campus Fields.

Appuzo, last year’s Tewaaraton Award winner as the top player in the nation, added two assists to move into a first-place tie on the Eagles’ all-time scoring list.

Elizabeth Mastrio led the Big Green with four goals, while Kierra Sweeney added two and Campbell Brewer, Katie Bourque, Kathryn Giroux and Kellen D’Alleva scored once.

MEN’S SWIMMING Dartmouth opens Ivies with program record

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Big Green kicked off the Ivy League championship meet by setting a program record in the 800-yard medley relay.

Connor LaMastra, Carter Jacobsen, John Hall and Joe Moll recorded a time of 6 minutes, 33.83 seconds that broke, by less than a second, the school mark set last year. Dartmouth finished seventh in the race.

Preliminary-round events continue on Thursday.

NEW LONDON — The Chargers (0-4, 6-6) dropped a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match to the Pride by scores of 30-28, 25-20 and 25-15.

Drew Beimel and Kostea Andreenko each had 12 kills for Regis. Orlando Plagata paced Colby-Sawyer nine kills and 10 digs.

The Chargers are off until hosting NVU-Johnson on Wednesday.
