West Lebanon — Woodstock High’s Khara Brettell is the only Upper Valley athlete selected to the Vermont Girls Ice Hockey Coaches Association all-state team, while five other skaters from the region have at least one more hockey game to play for their schools.

Brettell landed on the association’s Division II second team for her role in guiding the Wasps to a 15-6-1 record, the best in program history, and a second straight trip to the VPA D-II semifinals. A junior defenseman, Brettell scored five goals and added eight assists, topped by a two-goal performance in a 3-2 win over Stowe at Union Arena on Jan. 15.

The effort came in the middle of a seven-game point-scoring streak for Brettell, who should return with the bulk of her teammates for another run at states next winter. Woodstock posted five shutouts and held its last seven foes to no more than two goals each to close the campaign.

The Woodstock girls’ sole senior, Lauren Forgione, joins four other area players set to skate in the Vermont High School All-Star Hockey Classic at the Essex Skating Facility on March 24. Hartford’s Emily Ballou will suit up with Forgione in the 4 p.m. girls game, while Hartford’s Tyler Hamilton and Woodstock’s Steven Townley and Cullen McCarthy are set for the 6 p.m. boys contest. The games serve as a means of selecting a Vermont roster for this summer’s Make-a-Wish Classic against New Hampshire.

Forgione also made the VGIHCA all-academic team along with Hartford senior Hannah Ballou. The list is open to senior athletes maintaining a 3.50 grade-point average.
