Meet and Greet, And Eat And
Singer Tom Chapin came to Plainfield primarily to play an all-ages show at the Plainfield Town Hall Sunday afternoon, but he didn’t skip town without giving one of his fans a thrill she’d never forget. Working behind the counter at the Meriden Deli Mart that day was 18-year-old Sarah Berman of Meriden, who listened to Chapin’s In My Hometown CD daily as a young girl. Unable to make the show due to her Sunday afternoon shift, Berman was stunned when Chapin “walked in and said, ‘I heard Sarah makes the best sandwiches in Meriden,’ ” she recalled. Momentarily confused, Berman said she “flipped out” when the stranger introduced himself as Tom Chapin, who was tipped off by concert promoter Thom Wolke about his longtime fan. Chapin presented her two of his CDs, autographed her copy of In My Hometown, and posed for a photograph with his fan. “That was amazing,” said Berman, who returned the favor by preparing Chapin a cranberry-walnut chicken salad sandwich.
