VSAC To Offer Help With School Aid Forms
Vermont Student Assistance Corp., the student lending and loan servicing company, will be holding workshops early next month in area schools that cover how to fill out financial aid forms.
Parents and students can fill out the forms during the workshops if they bring copies of their 2012 taxes, 2013 final/December pay stubs, W-2s, bank statements and any other pertinent financial information. All of this information will be kept confidential and VSAC employees will be available to help with the online forms for financial aid and Vermont grant programs.
The workshops are scheduled for Monday, Jan. 6, 4 to 8 p.m. at Rivendell Academy in Orford, and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the library at Hartford High School; Tuesday, Jan. 7, 6 to 8 p.m. at Thetford Academy; and Wednesday, Jan. 8, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Windsor High School.
Another round is planned for a week later, with workshops at Blue Mountain Union High School in Wells River on Monday, Jan. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m.; at South Royalton School on Jan. 13, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and at Oxbow Union High School in Bradford on Jan. 14, 6 to 8 p.m.
The workshops are free, but space is limited. Contact your school to sign up.
Congrats to Gareth Solbeck. He was valedictorian of his class at Mascoma Valley Regional High School last spring and is studying at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Word came out just in recent weeks, however, that he was one of only 19 students around the world to have a perfect score on the Advanced Placement Computer Science A Exam.
∎ Michael Bean, a senior at Lebanon High School, was the school’s Student of the Month for October. Bean is a faithful volunteer at LISTEN community dinners. The Student of the Month for November is Cate Pierson. In announcing the award, school officials noted her positive attitude, acceptance of all students and involvement in school activities, including crew and drama.
∎ A team from Hartford Area Career and Technology Center placed second in New England Culinary Institute’s sixth annual Culinary Classic Competition. Culinary students from 10 Vermont technical schools competed against the clock to create three dishes in 90 minutes — a white bean, tomato and greens soup appetizer, a chicken breast with thyme beurre blanc and risotto main course and a sweet crepe dessert.
The Hartford team consisted of Chef Aron Tomlinson, Charlie Moye of Canaan, Heather Bailey of Enfield and Kyle Perkins of Quechee.
