Letter: Time to Leave the 19th Century
To the Editor:
Alex Hanson’s May 30 Art Notes (“What Are You Looking At?”) was a tantrum, not a review. I think Hanson is confused and uncertain about what he’s looking at when he looks at contemporary art. There actually exist steps and standard guiding principles for critiquing art, but Hanson doesn’t employ them, much to the detriment of his readers and to artists and to art. It’s absurd for someone calling himself an art reviewer to look at abstract or nonrepresentational art and expect to find familiar imagery or sentimental narrative. To go a step beyond, as Hanson did, and write off Elana Herzog’s work as something to throw on the burn pile is just plain irresponsible. Please, Mr. Hanson, if you don’t wish to educate yourself about what art is here and now, in 2013 and not in 1845, please turn over Art Notes to someone more qualified.
