Year in Photos: ‘The Pig Had Stayed in the Yard I Saw Her Run Into’

At their home in Thetford, Vt., on June 20, 2013, Donovan Cole and his mom Emilie Lambert Cole watch the pig lie down that has been hanging around their yard since the morning. The pig had been running along the road dodging cars when it went into this yard. Lambert Cole set the pig up with some water gave it some grain, took it for a walk behind the house and has spent a good deal of her day looking out for the animal. She said laughing "Ive already completely given up my day to this pig, I had stuff to do but I wanted to make sure she was ok". The town's animal control officer has been notified about the pig but no one had yet claimed her. (Valley News - Jennifer Hauck)

I can often spend a good part of my day driving around the Upper Valley hoping to find an interesting situation to photograph. In June I was very lucky. While driving to work, I saw a pig running along the road near my home in Thetford. I slowed down, and the pig, running in front of my car, made its way to a nice yard and turned in. I thought, well maybe this is where she lives, and continued to work. I later called the Town Clerk’s Office to find out about the pig. The town’s animal control officer had been notified, and I learned the pig had stayed in the yard I saw her run into. As a matter of fact, the family that lived there had taken her for a walk and fed her. So I went back to Thetford to check this all out. Emilie Lambert Cole and her children had spent the day with the pig. I hung around with Emilie who accommodated two uninvited guests, the pig and me. That night, after I’d gone to work, the owners of the pig came and got her. She lived about a mile up the road. Lambert Cole gave them some crackers and they led her home with them. It had been a fun day, and as I often do, I said to myself, “I love where I live.” — Jennifer Hauck
