Teevens Staying On Job
Hanover — Dartmouth College football coach Buddy Teevens will return for the 2014 season, according to athletic director Harry Sheehy.
Teevens, a 1979 graduate of the college and a standout quarterback for the Big Green, completes the ninth season of his second stint at his alma mater with Saturday’s game against visiting Princeton. A victory would give Dartmouth a 5-2 Ivy record for the first time since 1997 and improve the team’s overall record to 6-4. The Big Green’s losses to Holy Cross, Bucknell and Harvard each came by three points, and the fourth was a four-overtime setback at Pennsylvania, the longest game in conference history.
Teevens, 57, is just 31-58 since returning to Dartmouth for the 2005 season and taking over a program that had sunk to the depths of the Ivy League in terms of personnel and facilities. Those problems that have been addressed in recent years, an 0-10 finish in 2008 notwithstanding.
The Big Green has gone 6-4, 5-5 and 6-4 overall the last three seasons, including 4-3 marks in Ivy play.
Sheehy’s short email said the length and details of Teevens’ new contract will be determined in the coming weeks and that the decision to bring the coach and his staff back for 2014 was made two days before Dartmouth won at Brown, 24-20, last Saturday.
“I’ve seen progress in how our team has reacted to adversity, and I think there’s good potential there for that to continue,” Sheehy said Monday while watching the women’s basketball team lose to visiting Providence. “Sure, I’d like to be farther along. We’re a field goal away from playing for the Ivy League title on Saturday, but I’ve seen growth and I’d like to help Buddy continue that in any way I can.”
Teevens’ first stint as Dartmouth coach ran from 1987-91, closing with back-to-back 7-2-1 campaigns. The Big Green shared the 1990 league championship with Cornell and won the 1991 title outright.
He went on to head coaching jobs at Tulane and Stanford and assistant stops at Illinois and Florida before returning to his alma mater.
