Jennie D’Amante Bowen

Claremont, N.H. — Jennie D’Amante Bowen, 91, of Claremont, died Sunday afternoon, Aug. 11, 2013, at Sullivan County Health Care in Unity.

She was born in Claremont on June 17, 1922, the daughter of Frank and Carmelle (Valenta) D’Amante. She lived in Claremont most of her life except for the eight years spent in California and Virginia.

Jennie was a graduate of Stevens High School in the Class of 1940.

During World War II, she had worked at Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield, Vt. and later in retail shops on Pleasant Street.

She was devoted to her brother, Frank D’Amante and spent 25 plus years managing his property at Silver Beach Resort on Crescent Lake in Acworth.

Jennie’s family was the center of her life as were the many friendships she developed through the years. When you became her friend it was for life.

She loved anything Italian as well as cooking, baking, plants, music and crocheting. She delighted in sharing food and homemade items with all. She will long be remembered for her feisty spirit, her steel determination and her sharp wit.

The family includes one daughter, Jane Desbiens and her husband, Richard of Acworth; one son, Louis Millette and his wife, Janet of Claremont; five grandchildren, Julie Desbiens Fryer of Freeport, Maine, Leah Belanger and her husband, Matthew of Norwood, Mass., Christopher and Kayla Millette of Claremont, Scott Millette of Nashville, Tenn.; three great grandchildren, Josiah, Benjamin and Alanna Kearns of Freeport, Maine; one sister, Bernadette Prozzo of St. Petersburg, Fla.; several nieces & nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Sherman Bowen; two brothers, Carmine “Frank” D’Amante and Armand D’Amante and one sister, Mary Thibodeau.

Visiting hours will be held at the Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad Street, Claremont on Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Church on Aug. 21 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Shawn M. Therrien, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
